Yeah, the Evo is not a drag car. Never intended for that. My 2003 VIII still has its original clutch after 138 k. Treat them right and they do fine.

I expect something along the lines of this happened...

... So someone might have been trying to do an AWD burnout. Well, something will burn, but not those black round rubber things.

I think somebody needs to learn how to drive stick, speaking of which my fieance wants me to teach her how to drive manual... on my Jag, I'm thinking the LR Series IIA would be a better sacrificial lamb lol.

For the non-mechanics...what are we looking at here (I realize this is clutch guts)?

One of my friends bought his from CarMax from a guy who said "oh, cool, I'm making some money now, I'll buy an Evo!"

This is how it ended up at CarMax with low miles and a nuked clutch.

What you are looking at is the diaphragm spring and what little remains of the friction material from the clutch plate. This is the front end of the transmission, and when everything is bolted together the clutch plate will be pressed against the flywheel to get the power from the engine to the transmission. Here is a pretty informative bit on HowStuffWorks.com . They've got a couple interactive pictures that give a pretty good idea of what goes on in a clutch.
